AdSense Publishers Must Have a Privacy Policy

Do you use AdSense to monetize your site? If so, do you have a privacy policy?

Google recently updated their terms of service for AdSense. When you signed in, you had to agree to these new terms of service. But how many people actually read those things?

In case you are not aware of it, the big change to the terms of service is that you now need to display a privacy policy on your site, if you are using AdSense. Here is the explanation on the official Google AdSense blog.

Don’t worry, some kind bloggers have come up with a way to help you with this. I have found two so far:

  1. Jennifer Slegg of the JenSense blog has created a sample privacy policy that you are free to use on your blog.
  2. Eric Giguere of MEMWG has created a WordPress plugin that will create a privacy policy for you. It is called the Privacy Policy Plugin for WordPress.

I have not yet updated my blogs that use AdSense to include a privacy policy, but I certainly plan on doing it soon. I want to stay on AdSense’s good side!

I was just waiting for someone to come up with a solution I could use, and I believe either of the above two options will do the trick.

Have you added a privacy policy to your AdSense sites yet?

  1. Thanks for the tip Pat. I am one of those who sometimes don’t quite get to the bottom of the 300+ pages of terms and conditions on those Agree/Do Not Agree pages.

I am glad there are some people who take the time to keep track of the details.

    Brendan

  2. Thanks for the sample privacy policy and the plugin.

I guess it helps to read TOS and actually understand what you are getting into, eh?

    Thanks, Pat!

  3. Pat,

I don’t use any form of monetization on my site currently. I know I should since my industry (mortgages) is in the toilet and I could use any income I could get. I appreciate you supplying this information to everyone. As always, another great tip for fellow bloggers from Pat!

    Thanks,

  4. Pat cheers for the post to update us, shame on me for not fully reading the information when I read the updates, duh.

Installed the plugin on some of my blogs, working like a dream, thanks :-)

  5. Oups…I never read those Terms Of service…Maybe I should start doing it. But they are so long and boring that I could sell my house and have no idea. :D

  6. I didn’t know that we were required to have a privacy policy! :O

Thanks for the information or I wouldn’t have known.

  7. Should I be worried about this? I haven’t updated my sites to include a Privacy Policy yet and I don’t know if I should do it or not. Thanks!

  8. Martin, yes, you should do this. I have a feeling they will give everyone some time to do this. There are so many sites that don’t have a privacy policy yet. But eventually everyone that shows AdSense ads will need to have one.

  9. What a great piece of information to stumble upon. I have not yet put any AdSense on my weblog but the plans have been in the works along with all the other plans that are working their respective ways to the top of the shape-shifting peak of my priorities of what to work on next after I begin that study program in Ericksonian hypnotism under way . . . .

  10. Wow, thanks for this! I didn’t read the new ToS, either.
