How To Get Links To A Boring Blog
This is the third article in a case study I am doing to revive an old, boring but possibly lucrative blog. Here are the first two parts:
Yesterday, I focused on building links to the blog. In order to rank well in the search engines, I am going to have to get links to the blog. The blog is so boring, it would not work well for social networking.
There are going to be three parts to this section on link building, because I don’t want the post to get too huge. Today, I will discuss entering the blog into blog carnivals. The next two sections will focus on two automated tools I used for article submission.
Getting The Blog Into Blog Carnivals
The articles I got from article directories would not work for submissions to carnivals, so I knew I had to write my own article on the topic. But there are no blog carnivals on this particular topic. What to do?
I wrote an article on some of the things I learned when this particular issue affected my life. It turned out to be a personal-development type article, which is really good, because there are a lot of personal development carnivals out there.
It seems that a lot of the blog carnivals are on personal development, money, personal finance, writing, health, home and family subjects, or making money online. So if you can write your article with a spin toward any of these topics, you will have a lot of carnivals to submit to.
My article fit into the personal development and home/family areas, so I submitted to a bunch of those carnivals. Tip: sort the list by “Next Edition” to see which carnivals are coming up soon. This link already has them sorted for you.
Of course, it will take some time before I find out if my link-building campaign is successful. It takes time for the carnivals to be published, and then it takes more time for the search engines to find the links and rank my blog higher in their results. You really need to be patient and have faith that your efforts will pay off in the end.

Thanks, Court. I actually had a really boring title until I decided to submit it to Blogging Zoom. Then I thought up this title, so I quickly went back and changed it on the post.
Vladimir, in my experience, you don’t get much traffic from carnivals. There are too many articles, so people don’t read them. The carnivals are more useful just for getting links. It takes a while for this to have an effect on the search engines.
Keep submitting to carnivals and directories, and eventually you will get more search engine traffic because you will have more links to your site.
Christine and Jason, glad you like it!
That’s ok. You are right that it’s kind of artificial, but you need to get links somehow. Later when you are better known, links will come more naturally.
Pat that’s a really great title and a very interesting post. Some blogs are really hard to link build for without question. Article marketing can help with that problem a little!
That is definitely a great title. Once I saw the title I had no choice but to read the article. Good work!
This is a wonderful series Pat – I have not leveraged blog carnivals at all. Reading your list of the most popular types of blog carnivals got me thinking about how I could use them for some of my client’s blogs… thanks!
I have recently run an experiment on my blog about what blog directories actually get you traffic, also including blog carnival. However blog carnival did not work so well for me. Do you have some more tips on how to use it preoperly as I still new to it?
Thanks for the explanation. I know links are important for ranking but the whole process seems a little bit artificial if done only for links. Still new with blogging forgive my newbie attitude.
Pat:
So simple, but a breakthrough for me. I ahve been struggling with the carnivael idea and how to participate with such a narrow niche topic. Making money online or money in general might be a way if I craft my message correctly.
Thanks!
